To equip each student with basic theoretical and analytical tools of contemporary evolution and conservation science. Key among these tools is hypothesis testing: one of our main goals is to enhance every student’s skills at formulating and testing clear hypotheses;

To put this “tool kit” to work in understanding the unusual flora and fauna of Galápagos, and to see how many of the unique adaptations of endemic species have been turned into profound conservation challenges by recent human activity in the islands;

To understand the challenges and potential of environmental education in Galápagos. We will consider environmental education programs for residents in Galápagos, adults as well as children, and for visiting tourists. To what extent are the various efforts successful and how might they be improved?

To see firsthand, in our 8-day exploration, the changes underway today in the islands and their implications for sustainability. In what ways is Galápagos changing from a “little world within itself” (as Darwin called it, 1839:454) into one big social-ecological system permeated by the influence of human activity?
